Redesign Your Summer Shack

Room RedesignImagination is as valuable as a big budget when it comes to transforming your home.

Spruce up your home for free with these easy redesign tips.

  1. TURN A STOOL INTO A SIDE TABLE. – Repurpose a seat into a handy stand, perfect for pulling up alongside a sofa or easy chair. Try one on its own, or cluster a few (even varied heights work). And remember less is more!
  2. CHANGE YOUR CHAIRS. – Matching dining sets can feel boring over time. Trade a couple of seats from the kitchen with ones in the dining room.
  3. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OPEN SHELVES. – Pull out your pretty pitchers or patterned plates and arrange them to be admired. Grab some plate stands at the dollar store to use for your colorful patterned plates as an accessory.
  4. REARRANGE LAMPS AND SHADES. – Swap a bedside lamp with one from your desk or the living room, or simply switch the shades for a different look. This is my favorite – a small design trick that has a big impact on the design of the room.
  5. RENEW A WHOLE ROOM. – Play around with your furniture configuration—reposition a sofa, rotate an area rug, or try dividing the room with an open-backed bookcase or storage unit.
  6. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX – Use a glass jar as a vase, group ottomans as a coffee table, or try a pretty basket to hold a plain planter.
  7. RE-STYLE YOUR BOOKSHELF – Since messy shelves can make an entire room look disorganized, pretty yours up with nicely colored book covers, accessories from around the home – Again, remember less is more!
  8. BRING THE OUTDOOR IN – Wicker, wrought iron and decorative aluminum furniture can create a garden-, coastal-, beach- or cottage-themed space inside.
  9. ARRANGE UNIQUE TABLESCAPES – Design mini-vignettes on tables, mantels or buffets with keepsakes, from fine china to figurines. There’s no point in keeping interesting items around if no one ever sees them.

Happy Redesign!

A new generation 2

Hey . . . Happy Friday!

Head over to my Pinterest page to find all sorts of information for home and business. Make sure you keep checking back, I’m always adding new pins daily.

Pinterest is the one place I need to use a time management tool – I set a timer when I go on this “DIY * Crack”. I have zero experience with crack, but I heard of people’s description of it and it’s the same freakin’ feeling I get when researching DIY, designs, sewing projects on Pinterest.

So . . . I set the timer to keep me focused on the items that I want to pin to my boards – if there is no plan you could go nuts, PINNING EVERYTHING! Stay focused, make it a purposeful activity.

Happy Pinning . . . .

How to use Pinterest

Holistic Organizing

To help anyone organize you need to start somewhere. Choose a starting point: one shelf, one desk drawer, that pile of papers on the desktop. Start with the easiest spot first.

Instead of looking at the WHOLE  organizing project, I have found that breaking down the project into smaller parts can be beneficial for some, and look more confusing for others. Years ago after attending a workshop, I started using THEMES with some of my clients that were struggling with getting and staying organized.

How it works with a client that suffers from maybe some level of ADD/ADHD, Chronic Disorganization and/or Hoarders is “a theme is a way of holding a whole together while you take it apart” said by Judith Kolberg. I have an example of a theme I used years ago with a client.

The client was a nurse, going to Med School to become a doctor, had two daughters enrolled at dance school, one daughter in sports, plus the family volunteered. Her family consisted of four daughters ages 3 to 12 years old, and a husband. The client loved the Theme: Nurses Station, we worked together with the family to set-up a nurses station in an area in the dining room. This family was not using the dining room to eat meals, so I thought it would be a great way to get them back to a gathering space.

Here is a sample of the simple area we created:

Communication Center_THEMES

We picked a 2’ x 2’ (approx) area in the corner of the dining room. We hung on the wall a big beautiful calendar (COMMUNICATION CENTER) that the family picked out, under the calendar, I hung a nice sturdy shelf (SUPPORT) to hold highlighters, pens/pencils, post*it notes, etc. Underneath the shelf, we placed a file cabinet (SECRETARY). It had been sitting in the basement filled with Barbie & ken and all their stuff (if you’re wondering, they were evicted – they did not go quietly!). I cleaned up the file cabinet to almost new, placed it under the shelf. The secretary held all the information for each family member (patients). The file cabinet included all the things the family loved to do together; hiking, vacations, volunteer work, all the invitations, save the dates, and anything else to help this family function efficiently, with peace of mind and most importantly FUN! Between the wall and file cabinet on the left hand was a Tote (SUPPORT) for the library, dry cleaning, repairs, consignments, etc. There is one picture missing – I placed a basket on top of the file cabinet for all the mail, instead of throwing on the couch, the stairs, or countertops it has its own home.

“Holistic Organizing is not changing behavior, it just modifies it.” ~ C.C.

The First Step Clearly Defines What It Is You’re After

I had a moment of Clarity last week. It came when I was going through the clutter in my office that had accumulated in the past few days, trying to get ready for another work week of building relationships, scheduling my content for my blog, deciding what flyer to send to the printer, and the many other things solo business owners must get done.

My moment came when I realized that finishing my book has been front and center in my thoughts and dreams. So, I made the first step – after I organized a few weekly business content and information. I then made a home for all my “Book Stuff” – I put it out in the open (not hiding in the back of the closet) to access, to write notes, to start my research and interviews.

It was a small step – but a step none the less!

What’s your first step?

Whatever your first step is

Sunday Blessings . . .

Grounding Yourself with Meditation * Affirmations * Visualization

I use meditation to reduce my Anxiety and Panic attacks – The Mindful Movement is one that a friend turned me on to, I love her soothing voice!

I know I’m not the only one out here suffering from these attacks at certain times of life. The brain is a powerful instrument – when these attacks are happening to me I have created “Anchor Sayings” I use (some call affirmations), when the attack is happening it’s like my brain is driving at 100 miles and hour, but my body doesn’t know where it’s going. The sayings get me back into control of this vessel I call my body.

Anchor sayings I use are “Cheryl, you are okay“, “Cheryl, you are not dying“, “Cheryl, this will pass soon”. I personally, get up and move, does not matter what time of day it is – I do something. I clean, I organize an area, I dance slowly, I workout lightly (lift light weights) I don’t do a full workout! I  personally have to move – laying in bed do the deep breathing does not help me.

Another tool I use is visualization – I create a clear picture of how I want to feel. I love to be at the ocean so I will often picture myself walking on the beach with all the noises and smells of being there. This along with my anchor sayings will bring me out of the attack with minutes – I know when it’s happening it can feel like forever!

I hope you find these tools can help you live a more productive and happy life as they have helped me throughout the years. Enjoy the meditation this morning.

Peace & Harmony ~ Cheryl

Solitude In A Social World

introvert quote 2

The big buzzword of today in the life-coaching arena is “Accountability” – they suggest to tell the world what you’re “doing” by notifying friends and posting on social media to keep yourself accountable. I say bullshit, you tell the world what you’re doing and everyone wants to talk to you about it.

If you’re an Introvert like myself, you don’t want to tell the world what you’re up to. You want to be left alone to think, plan, and then you’ll be ready to talk. You select the ‘safe people’ to talk to about your goals and visions let them be your “confidant buddies”.

I’m an “outgoing introvert” which means, I make myself go out to meet people, try new adventures, and get out of my comfort zones. I love meeting new people, I love being around people, but I do not get my energy and creativity from people. I get that by spending time with myself creating ,expressing myself with Journal Writing, Vision Journals, Sewing, and Reading.

For years I have worried that people would think I was a little different – unique! I would have these self talks that would go something like this: “Cheryl, it’s okay that you didn’t want to go” or “it’s okay not to go, nobody want to be around someone not having a good time”. My mother was an extrovert, she never understood why I didn’t want to go with her on the weekends visiting all her friends (except for a few fun gals!). She never understood that it’s where she got her refuel, but I would sit there feeling empty.

“People empty me, I have to get away to refill”~C. Bukowski.

I’m a BTH (Back of the house) kind of person, I’m not looking for the spotlight. I like to facilitate – be that guiding person to make sure everyone has what they need to shine! I’m an approachable person, my husband says I’m like a magnet to certain people. Some people mistake that for me being this outgoing extrovert – when I’m really just being a nice, kind, and outgoing introvert.

We should start having conversations with people that we work and hang out with. The first question we should ask is, Where do you get your energy from, being around people or being with yourself?

Susan Cain  is my new hero, she truly knows what is going on inside of my introvert brain. Listening to her on a podcast a few years ago made me cry. It was the first time I felt like I finally was given a big “thumbs up” for being who I was, and that it’s okay to spend time with yourself recharging.

I think back to when I was a Preschool Teacher, I can think of five students I had that had these characteristics of an introvert. Those same students are now fourteen to sixteen years old, they’re at an age when the young tribe (teenagers) want to gather and plan what they will do for communication, engagement, and fun things away from their older tribal members (parents!). How wonderful would it be to communicate to parents and  future educators about what is observed when learning if a preschooler portrays the introvert or extrovert character traits? This information would be very informative when creating group activities, study groups, and other peer team-building programs.
