Motivation is Powerful

~ 4 Tips to Stay Motivated  ~

  1. Make a Date – Knowing where and when to start is half the battle to finding the motivation to organize.  The next part is actually ‘doing it”. Take a look at your calendar and see if you have some time on your next days off to fit in some organizing.  Pick a day when you don’t have much going on and choose how long you want to spend working on your organizing project (I set a timer). I recommend choosing a time early in the day, because if you wait to organize later in the day, it most likely won’t happen. You have time to think of excuses or putting other projects (that you really like to do) before the organizing project.
  1. The Big Picture – I usually take a photo of my projects, even my own at home. Grab your camera or cell phone and take pictures of what you need to organize. Download it onto your computer and take a look.  Pictures have a wonderful ability to show us things we might miss while we’re standing in the space at the moment. Be objective with yourself when looking at the photo and jot down some notes on what you see:

  • Does anything jump out at you?
  • What do you like about the picture?
  • What don’t you like?

This little trick can be super helpful when you’re working on a large-scale project.  When you start to lose that motivation to keep going, pull up the photo or take a new photo of the space to remind yourself of how far you’ve come.  And just think about how amazing that AFTER photo is going to look!

  1. Get Your Groove On – Play your favorite playlist or youtube your favorite get-up and move tunes, or maybe you’re like me at times I prefer a playlist with more soothing music to help get the organizing work under away.  Whatever your preference, make sure it is music that will INSPIRE you to keep focused on the project. I find this really helpful when I get to the purging stage that comes after sorting. You know that point where things are looking so much worse than they did before you started?  That’s when you need those tunes cranking!
  1. Find Your Organizing Mentor – Everyone needs one!  Whether it someone in a group you’re with on Facebook , or someone you know in real life, or find someone who is good at organizing and take some time to have a chit-chat with them. For me, I have one – Julie Morgenstern, I bought her book Organizing from the Inside Out in 1998. I fell in love because she let me know I was not ‘weird’ for loving Order & Tidy!  My mom would tell her friends how “I can walk into a room to get something her and when I left something would have been organized… in just a matter of minutes”. Julie’s book and other resources I have collected over the years are like my “Organization Bibles” – I highlight, make notes, and flag pages. These resources along with magazine photos keeps me motivated to complete my projects . . . Whatever works!

Good luck with your projects – don’t give up, keep the end result in sight!

How To Organize Your Spring-Clean

Spring makes everything New Again

I love when Spring arrives, I open all the windows in the home to let the sunshine & breeze in and Winter’s dirt & dust out!

My  Deep-Clean Checklist works well for going through the home to check off those areas that take a beating every winter season; entry ways, downstairs & hallway half baths, living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and floors.

Now, that you have a plan of action, you need to gather your tools and equipment for the project.

Mine & Martha’s favorite Natural Cleaning Products

“I’m not here to reinvent the wheel – just tweak it!” that’s what I did with 2 of Martha’s recipes. I have been using my own solutions + Martha’s in my home for the last few weeks, I will post the outcomes with the recipes in a future post with pics, along with how to store them properly.

The two resources above will help get you started on your way to breathing fresh air back into the home!

Home Is Where The Stuff Is – Declutter and Downsizing For Seniors

declutter and downsize the home

5 Easy Ways to Start Downsizing Today

1 – Start with your closet. Donate or sell anything you haven’t worn in 6 months, this is a rule I have followed since 1986. Why not try the Hanger Method, one of Peter Walsh’s favorite tricks? Using this method, you hang all the clothes in your closet the wrong way. As you wear the items, you hang them back up the right way. After 6 months or a Season, you can quickly see exactly which clothes you don’t wear just by scanning the direction of your hangers.

2 – How about your kitchen? Recycle all of those plastic storage containers that are missing lids, and all of the lids that are missing containers. (I even have this problem at home — where do all those lids go?)

3 – The bathroom. If you’re a woman, I know you can do some deep-cleaning here. I’m just guessing you have at least 3 bottles of shampoo, one of which is probably very near empty but still sits in your shower, right? Toss it into the recycle bin.  And what about makeup? Do you have compacts filled with crumbled and broken powder or eye-shadow? THROW THEM OUT! If you haven’t used it in the past 3 months, it’s safe to say you probably will not be using it, so clear out the clutter and make room for the products that you do use and love.

4 – Sell your old books online at a site like BookScouter.com. You can also look for a local used bookstore that buys old books or your local library. This is a great way to get rid of old books and trade for gently used books that you want to read.

5 – Go buy a sketchbook at an art supply shop, Michaels   or Ocean State Job Lot in the CT & RI area. Go through your magazines and tear out any recipes, outfit or decorating ideas, etc. and tape them in the pages of your sketchbook. Then get rid of the magazines. What a great way to rid yourself with several years worth of old magazines.

Downsizing in Easy – Simple Quick Steps

The above 5 steps are a good start to downsizing your life, but what about the rest of your stuff? Where do you begin? How do you know what to keep and what to get rid of? You can contact Cheryl at CC Home Concierge Company ~ formerly Envision-Designs for a free 30 minute consultation, together we will come up with a Downsizing & Relocation Plan for the home.
